We introduce a mitigation-agnostic tanh-based contention score for microservices—implemented in the Gordion framework—and show it can be predicted from performance counters and within-service latencies so operators can act before SLO violations.
We outline a tracing-based method to diagnose contention in distributed systems by localizing victim requests, finding temporally overlapping concurrent traces as candidate aggressors, and iteratively enabling contention-focused tracepoints.
VAIF automatically selects low-overhead distributed tracing instrumentation to localize performance problems in systems like OpenStack and HDFS.
